My sister Liza and I went to Ateneo to donate goods and see how we could help. Inspired by my Multimedia Journalism class, I decided to make a simple news video with Liz to show others what's happening as well as encourage everyone to help out too.

In the video, volunteer Eric Santillan talks about the spirit of volunteerism and the goods needed. Singer Miguel Escueta encourages others to do what you can to help.

July 27, Monday: We spent our last two days in LA packing and exploring the city with our cousins Mariel and Andrea. After lunch, Mariel drove us to Hollywood and Highland, home of Kodak Theatre and the famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre, where the Hollywood Walk of Fame is located. After walking around in the blistering heat, we hopped back in the car and cruised around the city, where Mariel showed us popular sights, like Sunset Boulevard, Melrose Place, and popular clubs where celebs like to hang out.

By 530 pm, we picked Andrea up at her place and proceeded downtown to meet Zing, one of my good friends from the SIF-ASEAN Fellowship. (I think it's awesome that fellows are meeting up all over the world!) We walked to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, where we saw a filming of the new Melrose Place—pretty cool except we didn't recognize any of the stars. Haha! After that, dinner at Daikokuya and dessert at Cefiore. Busawg! :)

July 28, Tuesday: To make the most of our last day in the US, Liz and I visited Griffith Observatory, together with Mariel. Though we already visited Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Liz and I were still excited to see Griffith (it was my dream to become an astronaut before!), where we were able to watch a really cool show called, "Center of the Universe." As Andrea said, "it made me feel so small!"

Soon, it was time for us to go. Tito Andy and Tita Mae drove us to the airport, where we had our last dinner with Tita Tennie, Rea, and Tita Mae. A few hours later, our final boarding call was announced and it was time to fly home!

-=-

And that's the last of our two-week sojourn to the US of A. Mama, Liza, and I had an amazing time! We all say, "Bitin!" A million thank yous to everybody who made our stay fun and worthwhile. :)

July 25, Saturday: Mama and Liz flew back to LA so Mama could attend another high school reunion in Rowland Heights. Meanwhile, I stayed behind to spend more time with Camille. We started the day by having coffee at Ghirardelli and planning our day. Then, we hopped on a bus and headed to the Museum of Science and Industry to buy tickets for "Harry Potter: The Exhibition." After buying the tickets, we had brunch at a nearby Italian restaurant. We just discovered the cozy little resto by accident!

After that, we headed back downtown to Camille's office. I left her so she could work for a bit while I wandered around the streets of Chicago by myself—quite empowering for a gal like me who's not used to traveling alone. Luckily, Chicago is pretty safe and the streets are easy to navigate. I managed to shop at the Sports Authority and TNF too!

By 5 pm, Camille and I met up again and made our way back to the Museum of Science and Industry for Harry Potter. The exhibit was absolutely awesome!!! It showcased most of the original props and costumes from the six movies. They had all the wands, the books, the classrooms of the teachers, Hagrid's hut, the Great Hall, the dark forces, the candy shop, Quidditch balls, their school robes, dress robes (from HP4), and casual outfits of Harry, Ron and Hermione—even the ones from the first movie and you could see how small they were back then. Camille and I were squealing with excitement the whole time we were there. Picture-taking wasn't allowed inside the exhibit, but I got a few stolen shots from my phone cam. Haha!

After that, we headed off to Greek Town for dinner at Greek Islands. We decided to order this set meal "for two or more" which featured a lot of the popular dishes. We had so much food! We ended up staying there for almost three hours just eating and talking. And we still had a giant doggie bag to bring home! As the Candy girls would say, BUSAWG!!!

July 26, Sunday: After having our leftover Greek food for breakfast, it was time for me to head back to LA. I was so sad! I was going to miss Chicago and Camille so much. (Good thing she's coming home for Christmas. See you in December, girl!)

I was at the O'Hare airport by 10 am. My United Airlines flight was supposed to leave by 12, but a problem occurred and we had to get off the plane and wait for a new one! I ended up leaving Chicago at 3 pm. I missed my connecting flight from Denver to LA too, so I had to wait to get on the 6 pm flight to LA. I finally made it back to Rowland Heights at 10 pm. All in all, I spent 12 hours traveling from Chicago to LA. Imagine that! It wasn't so bad though as I had my book, magazines, iPod and a good selection of food at the Chicago and Denver airports to keep me company. I'm just glad I made it back to LA safe and sound. :)

July 24, Friday: Another happy day of touring Chicago! We literally hopped on to the "Hop On, Hop Off Bus" which passes along popular spots around downtown Chicago. Our first stop was Millenium Park, home of the giant bean, which reflects the beautiful skyline of Chicago. We also stopped by Garrett's popcorn (home of Chicago's best popcorn—true! I haven't tasted anything quite like it!), the Adler Planetarium, and the Hershey store. After that, shopping at H&M!

July 22, Wednesday: We arrived in Chicago at around 9 pm. After dropping off our stuff at Camille's place, we headed to Tempo Cafe for a late dinner. Food was superb!

July 23, Thursday: While Camille went off to work, Mama, Liz and I went on an Architectural Cruise on the Chicago River. I couldn't remember most of the buildings' names, so most captions are courtesy of Liz who researched them again! Hehe. For lunch, we tried Chicago's famous deep dish pizza at Pizzeria Uno. Then, a bit of shopping before heading off to mom's mini-reunion with her high school friends in the suburbs.

July 20, Monday: After shopping the whole day with the Toms (Tita Ten, Uncle Robert, and Rea), we rushed back to their home in Northridge to pack our things for Vegas! When we got there, it was raining—a rare occurrence in Vegas. We had a late dinner to celebrate Ninong Frank's birthday at Bill's before retiring for the night at Tahiti Village Resort.

July 21, Tuesday: For the first time in our US trip, I was able to exercise. Hehe. Jogged at the Tahiti gym and swam at the lazy pool. Then, we were off for another day of hotel-hopping (most of the photos were taken while we drove around), gambling (tried the slot machines for the first time!), and shopping till we dropped at the Las Vegas outlet. We were also able to watch the fountain show at the Bellagio before going back to the resort for a yummy "home-cooked" dinner.

July 22, Wednesday: After checking out of the hotel, we visited Encore and Wynn. Then, we were off to Chicago for the next leg of the trip. :)

July 19, Sunday: Since we had already done the Disneyland-Universal thing before, we decided to visit California Adventure, right across from Disneyland, instead. Though it's much smaller, it still offers unique Disney-themed rides and musical shows and is much less stressful to navigate. :)

After that, a dinner treat from the Toms at Tony Roma's. So hungry I forgot to take photos of the food! :p

It's been nine years since I last visited the US so I was ecstatic when our visas were approved. Just a few weeks later, we were off the the USA! It was a whirlwind two-week trip (where I gained five pounds), but very well worth it! :)

On this leg of the race... err, I mean, the trip...

July 15, Wednesday: Touchdown on US soil!

July 16, Thursday: After a day of shopping, had dinner at Uncle Co's house for a pre-wedding celebration.

July 17, Friday: The double wedding of the century!

July 18, Saturday: As if we didn't party hard enough the night before, we had a post-wedding celebration at Tita Mae's. After lunch, I sneaked out of the party to bond with old ACLC friends Mickee and Rugee (They're brothers so I still consider going out with them a part of family bonding. Hehe.)

Dear Thads,

I can't believe it's been a year since you left us to climb the summit of heaven. I just wanted to let you know that you are remembered and that I miss you a lot. Last April, when I took up a Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy class with Fr. Bulatao in Ateneo, we had an automatic poetry writing session and I thought about you. I've been wanting to show you (and everyone else we know) this poem that I wrote, and I thought what better time than on your birthday. So consider this my gift to you. Sana hindi ka ma-cornyhan. Haha! Please give my regards to Jhoana and Anjo, who are also sorely missed. I trust that you are all well and always watching over us.

So without further ado, my poem for you...

Water gushed down the stream,
You stood and helped them get to shore.
You gave your life so they could have theirs,
You held her hand and didn’t let go.
You took a picture with your mind’s eye,
You didn’t want to say goodbye.

You held me up when I once fell,
I wish you could hold me up again.
We walked together, you and I,
Climbed many mountains way up high.
You greeted me with a smile,
When we crossed valleys under the sky.

Now you fly, you fly so very high,
You watch over Batch 2005.
You guide us as we cross raging rivers,
Climb over boulders, walk on terraces,
Camp on uneven ground,
Cook our meals, drink our wine.

And finally as we climb to meet the sunrise,
You wave hello, you say goodbye.
You flash that smile, you warm our hearts.
As the cold wind blows,
We wrap our arms around ourselves,
Holding our jackets tight.
But then we realize it’s you hugging us,
Comforting us with your presence.

You were there all along,
Watching us, protecting us, loving us
From your place in the summits of mountains,
Floating by the clouds,
Close to the sun,
Close to God.

Happy birthday, Thads!

Love,
Angel

P.S. In case you'd like to remember or know more about Thads, you can read my past blog entry here or browse through this album.

It was 6:00 am on a Sunday morning. Instead of being curled under the covers of my bed, I was standing inside the Ateneo covered courts, waiting for my turn to participate in the Ateneo Aquathlon 2009. Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” blared from the speakers while the race participants—a mixture of seasoned athletes, amateurs, and students—got ready.

I decided to join the Ateneo Aquathlon only three weeks before the race. I’ve been an avid runner for a few years and I’ve joined several marathons in the past just for fun. I love swimming as well, but it never occurred to me to do both on the same day! When some friends expressed their interest in joining the aquathlon, I thought maybe I could do it too. With just a few weeks to train, I alternated between swimming and running after work and on weekends.

While waiting for the race to start, I did some stretches. I had no idea what was going to happen. My heart pounded and my pulse raced when my category—women 22 to 29 years old—was called for a briefing. To complete the 600-meter swim, we had to do three sets of eight laps in a zigzag pattern in the 25-meter swimming pool. After that, we had to run two rounds on a 2.5-kilometer route around the Ateneo campus to complete the 5-kilometer run....

Scored free VIP tickets to the Pussycat Dolls concert on the day itself, thanks to MTV! I'm so glad Roland and I were able to go. It just so happened that it was our 39th monthsary but we didn't really have anything special planned. Instant date! :)

I'm actually a huge PCD fan. I love most of their songs! But since I had just watched David vs. David, I didn't want to spend money on concert tickets again. Luckily, I didn't have to!

Here's a list of the songs they sang:

1 Takin Over The World
2 Beep
3 I Don't Need a Man
4 Elevator
5 I Hate This Part
6 Buttons
7 Wait a Minute
8 Halo (Nicole's solo)
9 Hey Big Spender (Melody, Ashley and Kimberly)
10 Whatcha Think About That?
11 Bottle Pop
Intermission: Mel, Ash, and Kim (feeling close!) led three audience members to a dance of Bottle Pop. Two of them were wearing really short skirts and did a "Paris and Britney" if you know what I mean. :p
12 Hush Hush
13 Stickwitu
14 Don't Cha
15 Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)
16 When I Grow Up

The show ended with an awesome fireworks display. Pero grabe, bitin pa rin! Jai ho! :)

June 1 to 3, 2009

This is my fourth time in Bangkok but I never get tired of visiting. There's always something new to discover and it's always a joy to see old friends again. :)

Here's what we did on this whirlwind trip: Arrived in Bangkok from Phuket past 12 noon... Went to Emporium mall to leave our luggage with Tat... Had a late lunch at an Italian place... Watched "Angels and Demons" because we were too tired and sleepy to go around... Had dinner with Thai friends at yummy Thai restaurant... Next day, lunch at MBK... Toured the Grand Palace and Wat Po... Had a traditional Thai massage... Went on a dinner cruise along the Chao Praya river... Met Gift at Neuy's condo right after and gabbed till 1 am... Lunch and coffee at the airport... Home sweet home. :)
